Icons, Idols, and Religions Versus True Faith
1 Samuel 4-5
In chapters 4 & 5, the timeline moves forward about 25 years from chapter 3 and Samuel is in his late 30s. Samuel was now judging Israel, but sadly the people had not turned from their wicked ways by heeding Samuel’s instructions. The result of the people’s waywardness is seen in the many defeats by their enemy, the Philistines. In the midst of battle, the Israelites took the Ark of the Covenant to the battlefield thinking that by doing so, they would be assured of victory. Unfortunately, their relationship with God had long vanished and religion overcame true faith.
