Saul was about to meet his match as the Philistines gathered together to attack Israel. David was not around and Samuel had died so there was no one to advise Saul. Even when he tried to hear from God, he got no answer. He, being a weak leader, became desperate and looked for a medium to give him answers. Finally his servants found a medium whereupon he disguised himself and went to see her asking her to bring up Samuel for him. To her and Saul's amazement, God permitted Samuel to appear, who foretold of Saul's pending death in battle.
